Everything you need to know about attending Miami Beach Pride in 2024!

We love Miami Beach. Name us a world-class city with a gorgeous beach on its doorstop with an exciting gay scene.

There are few – perhaps the gay scene of Sydney and gay Barcelona are the only other two we've encountered on our travels.

Miami is a city where being fabulous is practically in the air you breathe. It is the epitome of gay glamour! And guess what? Miami Beach Pride is one of the crown jewels of Florida's LGBTQ+ community.

What makes Miami Beach Pride so special? Read on for more(!)…but in a nutshell, it's not only one of the biggest pride events in the world, but most of all, it's got a flair like no other. It unfolds along a beautiful beach with the ocean waves as its backdrop. That beach is the iconic 12th Street Beach – the official gay beach of Miami, also one of our favorite gay beaches worldwide.

To top things off, Miami Beach Pride has a terrific parade, gay pool parties, queer art exhibitions, and even a Social Justice, Health & Wellness evening.

Here's what to expect for Miami Beach Pride, which we recommend you read alongside our detailed gay guide to Miami.

About Miami Beach Pride

Miami Beach has long been a haven and refuge for our LGBTQ+ community, dating back to the early 20th century. It wasn't until the 1970s and '80s that our fabulous community started to organize and assert its presence more openly.

The official roots of Miami Beach Pride can be traced back to the late 1980s when a group of LGBTQ+ activists and community members began organizing events to raise awareness and celebrate the local LGBTQ+ community. Thus Miami Beach Pride was born.

The defining moment was the introduction of the official Pride Parade. From its humble beginnings in 2009 when a mere 15,000 people gathered, it has today blossomed into a colossal celebration with a staggering 170,000 enthusiastic attendees. Pretty impressive, right?!

How many people go to Miami Beach Pride?

The 2023 Miami Beach Pride was the largest, attracting over 170,000 people. It is expected to grow and attract even more in subsequent years!

What day is Miami Beach Pride?

The next Miami Beach Pride Parade will take place on April 14th, 2024. The Parade kicks off at midday and winds down the iconic Ocean Drive.

Miami has plenty of gay bars, clubs, hotels and businesses for travellers to enjoy
Stefan and rainbows are everywhere in Miami during Pride!

The Miami Beach Pride Parade route

This colorful and inclusive celebration of love takes place along the iconic Ocean Drive, which is nestled in the city's famous Art Deco district (imagine scenes from the movie, ‘Birdcage' to whet the appetite!)

The parade kicks off at midday but the streets start to pack out with eager spectators from around 10 am. Organizers set up special seating areas along Ocean Drive to ensure everyone has a comfortable spot and to control the crowds becoming too claustrophobic.

Our hot tip: get there early and try to get a sidewalk seat at one of the cafes that line Ocean Drive. For the latest up-to-date info, check out the Miami Beach Pride website.

Miami Beach Pride is one of the best gay pride events in the USA!
Miami Beach Pride Festival looking fun and fabulous!

Who can join the Parade?

Businesses and non-profit organizations can register to join the parade for a fee which depends on whether they want to simply march, use a car/truck, or bus/float. Check the Miami Beach Pride website for the latest pricing info, and registration.

Our advice is to wait till the end of the parade when the crowds converge, turning the streets of Miami Beach into one big gay glorious street party!

Miami Beach Pride Events 2024

Expect tons of epic parties: this is Miami and you know they're going to pull out all the stops! Aside from all the partying, there is also a range of cultural and not-to-miss art events:

Pride Flag Raising and Pride Lights the Night

A rainbow flag is raised at Miami Beach City Hall at 6 pm, which marks the start of the Parade. At 7:30 pm the Pride Lights the Night opening ceremony begins. The streets are lit up in rainbow colors and guest speakers and famous singers take the stage to inspire/entertain the crowds.

In 2024, the Pride Flag Raising and Pride Lights the Night will take place on April 5th.

Pride Family Picnic

Fun for the whole (rainbow) family! The Pride family picnic features fun activities for kids at Pride Park along with entertainment for the kids at heart. Think face-painting, bouncy houses, and more, in a relaxing, inclusive environment.

In 2024, the Family Picnic will take place on April 7th from 10 am.

Queer Art Showcase

At the stylish Moxy South Beach Hotel, we got to immerse ourselves in the Queer Art Showcase, where the nation's most talented LGBTQ+ artists took center stage. The soirée kicked off at 6:30 pm and served up an evening filled with creativity, culture, and camaraderie. Original artworks on display are available to purchase. Annoyingly we didn't have the suitcase space for it.

Whether it's captivating photography, mesmerizing paintings, exquisite sculptures, or heart-stirring poetry, you can show your love and support for these LGBTQ+ artists by purchasing their artwork. And the best part? One hundred percent of the proceeds go straight into the hands of local LGBTQ+ artists.

In 2024, the Queer Art Showcase will take place on April 8th.

Miss Miami Beach Pride Pageant

The Miss Miami Beach Pride Pageant isn't your run-of-the-mill pageant from your childhood dreams. This fierce competition, hosted at the electrifying Exchange Miami, brings together the most fabulous drag queens from all across the nation for an all-night extravaganza.

The queens strut their stuff, flaunting their charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent!

It's a dazzling revue that will leave you gagging in amazement. These queens aren't just about looking good, they're about slaying in swimwear, delivering jaw-dropping talent performances, and exuding Pride from head to stiletto. Oh honey, we were LIVING!

In 2024, the Miss Miami Beach Pride Pageant will take place on April 9th. Doors open from 7 pm.

Social Justice, Health & Wellness Evening

Miami Beach Pride's Social Justice, Health & Wellness Evening promises an enriching experience, likely featuring insightful discussions on LGBTQ+ rights and social justice issues, providing attendees with opportunities for meaningful engagement. It is an evening that fosters personal growth and collective advocacy.

In 2024, the Social Justice, Health & Wellness evening will take place on April 10th.

The Pride Festival

The epicenter of the Pride festivities is the main Pride Festival, a thrilling two-day extravaganza held right in the heart of Lummus Park.

This is where the party truly comes alive, with multiple stages hosting sensational live music acts and DJs that will have you dancing 'til dawn. And here's the cherry on top – it's completely free to attend!

In 2024, the Pride Festival will take place on April 13th & 14th.

Plan your stay during Miami Beach Pride

We've put together some handy hints and tips to help you plan your trip to Miami Beach Pride. Read on to find out everything the gay traveler should know before they go.

Travel insurance: We never travel without the security of travel insurance and recommend you do the same for your trip to Miami Beach Pride. You just never know when a missed flight or lost luggage will derail all your plans, but at least with travel insurance, you are covered. We've been using Heymondo Travel Insurance and always recommend them as they provide excellent coverage at an affordable price. It's also easy to make a claim online if you need to.

How to get there: Obviously, if you're already in the US then you can drive, or catch a bus or a train to Miami Beach, but if you're coming from further away then you'll most likely be flying into Miami International Airport. We usually like to organize a private airport transfer to get us from the airport to our accommodation in Miami Beach, there's nothing worse than trying to juggle luggage on public transport, and this way we can be whisked in air-conditioned comfort straight to our hotel!

Getting around: Miami has a public transport system consisting of the Metrobus, Metrorail, and Metromover (an elevated train) however, the city is quite spread out so you'll probably still have to walk quite a lot, especially if you're staying in Miami Beach. We found hiring a car the most convenient way to explore all corners of the city and get to the beaches!

Accommodation: We love using Booking.com to find more accommodation options in Miami Beach, as they have all the best choices and many listings offer free cancellation if needed. They also have excellent 24/7 online customer support, in case you ever need help with your booking.

Sightseeing and adventure: For more fun activities and tours in Miami, we also love GetYourGuide. They have so many exciting things to see and do compiled in one place, along with online customer support available 24/7. We also recommend Miami and Beaches for assistance in planning your trip to Miami.

When to visit: Obviously, if you want to see the Miami Beach Pride Parade then you'll want to visit around April 14th. Since there are Pride events from April 5th we do recommend coming a little earlier if you want to experience it all though!

Safety tips during Miami Beach Pride

On the whole, Miami is a very gay friendly city and you should feel very safe during a fabulous event such as Miami Beach Pride. Nowhere is perfect though, so we've put together these tips for ensuring you stay safe while enjoying everything Miami Beach Pride has to offer!

  • Just like anywhere in the world, be aware of your surroundings, especially at a busy event like Miami Beach Pride. Traffic can be different from what you are used to and obvious tourists are always seen as the easiest pickings for thieves. This event can be very packed and a crowd is the best camouflage for someone who might do something nefarious…
  • Avoid excess drinking and the use of substances. It's far more likely that you will be taken advantage of, scammed, or even robbed if you are intoxicated. Sure, have a few drinks and a good time, but if you're going to get wasted, it's probably better to do that in a familiar environment.
  • Don't wear valuables in public. Pickpockets operate everywhere, and the flashier your belongings, the more attractive you are as a target. Not to mention that a big excited crowd means lots of targets who might not notice a sly little pickpocket. Leave your valuable and important items in your hotel safe so that even if you do find something missing, hopefully, it won't be anything too irreplaceable.
  • Invest in a good money belt. It's always better not to carry too much cash or credit cards anyway, but having a good money belt that hides under your clothes is another way to ensure nothing goes missing and you can just let loose and enjoy the festivities.
