Our gay Madrid travel guide includes the best gay hotels, bars, clubs, saunas, Pride events, things to do, and more, based on our many trips to Spain's vibrant capital.
If we had to choose just one European city for an unforgettable gay weekend, Madrid would be right at the top of our list. Few places combine incredible nightlife, beautiful architecture, outstanding food, and such a warm, welcoming LGBTQ+ community quite like the Spanish capital. For us, it’s the kind of place where one casual afternoon drink somehow turns into hours of laughter, long dinners with friends and wandering through buzzing plazas long after we planned to head home.
We've been coming back to Madrid for years, alternating between gay Barcelona, and every visit gives us another reason to fall for it. Whether we're wandering the streets of Chueca, discovering a brilliant new tapas spot, or dancing until the early hours, Madrid has an energy that's impossible to resist. It doesn't matter if it's your first visit or your tenth, this city has a habit of making you want to come back before you've even left.

Our gay Madrid travel guide brings together everything we've learned from our trips to help you plan yours. From the best gay hotels and bars to legendary clubs, saunas, Pride celebrations and our favorite things to do, we'll help you experience Madrid the way we love to: eating well, sleeping very little and making every day count.

Is Madrid safe for gay travelers?
Hell yeah! There's good reason why we think Madrid is one of the gayest cities in the world and why we keep coming back without fail every year! We never once felt unsafe anywhere in Madrid. Two men holding hands here in public just felt so normal for us. It also goes without saying that we've never once had to clarify to any hotel reception staff in Madrid that we (ie two men!) want to share a bed.
Simply put, Madrid is very gay! It has one of Europe's best gay scenes – Chueca is packed with gay bars, clubs, cafés, hotels and LGBTQ+ businesses. Madrid Pride is one of the largest and best gay Pride events in the world, attracting millions every year.
Madrid was one of the first places we visited as a young gay couple back in 2009. It WOWed us then just as much as it continues to wow us today!

Where is the gay area of Madrid?
The heart of gay Madrid is Chueca, a lively neighborhood just north of Gran Vía, which we regard as one of Europe's most iconic LGBTQ+ districts. It's packed with gay bars, clubs, cafés, hotels, saunas and LGBTQ+-owned businesses, all within a compact, walkable area that's easy to explore on foot.
Whenever we visit Madrid, we always stay in or around Chueca. Not only are you within walking distance of almost all of the city's gay nightlife, but you're also perfectly placed for Madrid's top attractions, excellent restaurants, shopping streets, and rooftop bars. Some of our favorite spots around Chueca to mark on your Gmaps include:
- Plaza de Pedro Zerolo: The social heart of gay Madrid. Lined with busy terraces and steps from many of the city's best gay bars, it's where we often begin (or end!) an evening out. During Madrid Pride, this square becomes one of the festival's main gathering points.
- Plaza de Chueca: The neighborhood's historic main square and a popular meeting place, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and the Chueca Metro station.
- Calle Pelayo: One of our favorite streets for bar hopping, with plenty of gay bars, cafés and LGBTQ+-owned businesses packed into just a few blocks.
- Calle de Hortaleza: Home to many of Madrid's best-known gay bars, clubs and late-night venues, making it one of the liveliest streets after dark.
- Mercado de San Antón: A modern food market that's perfect for lunch, tapas, or a rooftop drink before heading out for the evening.

What are the best gay hotels to stay in Madrid?
One of the things we love about Madrid is that you don't need to book a specifically gay hotel to feel welcome. Every hotel and apartment host we've stayed with has welcomed us with open arms – two men sharing a double bed never once raised an eyebrow.
Our advice is to stay as close to Chueca as possible. During major events like Madrid Pride or New Year's Eve, you can almost guarantee that every hotel in the neighborhood becomes a gay hotel! Here are a few of our favorite places to stay, based on our many trips to Madrid.

THE gay hotel in Madrid: Axel
If you're looking for a dedicated gay hotel, we recommend the adults-only Axel Hotel Madrid. The Axel “heterofriendly” brand is one of the most famous gay hotel brands in the world. Located just a short walk from Chueca, it combines stylish rooms with a sociable atmosphere, plus a rooftop pool and bar. Everything here is geared to meet both Mr Right and Mr Right Now…look out for their iconic “Do Disturb” door signs 🙂
Best gay hotels in Chueca: Room Mate Oscar + Hostal Chueca (Roomoo)
If you'd rather stay right in the heart of Madrid's gay neighborhood, Room Mate Óscar overlooks Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, the social gay heart of Chueca, while Hostal Chueca (Roomoo) is a great-value option just a few steps from many of the city's main gay bars like LL Bar and Black & White. Both hotels have earned Booking.com's #TravelProud certification.
Best boutique hotels for gay couples in Madrid: Only YOU + JC Rooms Santa Ana
For a more romantic and boutique gay hotel, we recommend Only YOU Boutique Hotel and JC Rooms Santa Ana, both in Chueca. They're the sort of places we book when we want stylish surroundings and a quieter night's sleep, without giving up the convenience of having Madrid's gay scene just a short stroll away.

STAY WITH A GAY LOCAL!
Misterb&b is the Airbnb equivalent for the LGBTQ+ community.
Unlike on Airbnb, you know your host is gay, avoiding any nasty surprises when you check in. It is also a great way to meet gay locals and discover the underground gay scene together.

What are the best gay bars in Madrid?
One of our favourite things about Madrid is how easy it is to bar hop around Chueca. It is compact, so it is easy to wander from one bar to the next, and in the warmer months, crowds spill out onto the streets. We won't list EVERY single gay bar in Madrid here, as there are far too many. But we've sorted it into the 3 categories we know most gay travelers will be interested in 🙂
Best gay bars in Chueca for pre-drinks with friends
Whenever we want to meet with friends for pre-drinks before heading to one of the big gay parties in town, these are the gay bars we'll likely head to. First up, You & Me is one of our favorite spots for an early evening cocktail. We love El Doce because it's always buzzing, especially at weekends. Diverzo is another popular option for good cocktails, as is D'Mystic.
Best gay bars in Madrid for drag shows
For the best drag shows, Madrid has some terrific bars that feature cabaret and drag performances. The LL Show Bar is arguably the most famous gay bar in Madrid for drag shows, at least the one that we default to – it's been around for decades. A short hop and skip away is Black & White – another Chueca institution for live drag and cabaret. We also recommend the La Lulú Showbar and Vuélvete Loca.
Best gay bars in Madrid for cruising
Oh, stop clutching your pearls! We know that at a certain point in the night, most of you will be seeking out a bar with a play area…and Chueca's got you covered 🙂 Boyberry Madrid and The Step are popular cruising bars with dark rooms and a sociable atmosphere, while Hot Bear's Bar has long been a favourite with Madrid's bear community and also features a busy dark room.

What are the best gay clubs and parties in Madrid?
Madrid is gay party central. There is always a big party happening in town, especially during a major event like Pride in early July, New Year's, or on long weekends. Here's a slice of the gay Madrid party pie to give you an idea:
Best regular gay clubs and parties in Madrid
Kluster at Rebel Club is where we head when we want a proper Saturday night of house music and a packed dance floor. If Stefan gets his way, it'll be Tanga! for the best pop anthems, while Candy is another good shout for commercial music and a fun, younger crowd. We recommend Sala Republik if you're looking for a more techno and electronic experience. Churros con Chocolate is a massive monthly Sunday T dance famous for being Madrid's most inclusive, campy, and pop-heavy gay party.
For the best bear party in Madrid, check out the weekly Bearbie Pop – every Saturday at Ya'sta Club.
Best gay clubs for cruising in Madrid
The best gay cruising club in Madrid is Strong. It's an institution! It's enormous, with several bars, a large dance floor, and an equally large dark room 🙂 The Ring is a nud1st private club with a massive play area featuring its very own boxing ring!
Best gay parties and one-off events
And then there are the big parties that have us looking at flights back to Madrid. Our favorite is MyPleasure. These guys go big, taking over huge venues and regularly selling out to massive crowds of gay men of all ages. Expect hot guys everywhere, a packed dance floor, and busy play areas that are popular throughout the night 🙂 Another large gay cruising party to check out is the Fuego Crush.
WE Party is the most popular gay circuit party organizer in the world. It's massive, with epic parties featuring thousands of topless muscly gays from all over the world, usually during Madrid Pride and New Year's. The main WE Party events to look out for include Macho, Sandia, and Guapo. We've had some crazy nights at these events, often in huge venues like Fabrik and La Riviera. Just note these parties are less cruisey than MyPleasure and more about the music/dancing.
One of the best annual gay bear parties to look out for in Madrid is Mad Bear, which takes place every December.

When is Madrid Pride and what is it like?
Madrid Pride, or MADO (Madrid Orgullo), takes place every year around late June and early July, with the main parade usually held on the first Saturday of July. It's famous for clashing with London Pride, forcing London gays to face the annual dilemma as to which one to prioritise…
This is one of the largest and best Pride celebrations in the world, with Chueca becoming the epicenter of a week packed with outdoor concerts, parties, and enormous crowds spilling into the streets. We've been to Madrid Pride several times and can safely say the city goes completely gay for the entire week! The atmosphere around Chueca is incredible, but the real highlight for us is the sheer number of epic parties taking place, like Sandia and MyPleasure.
Our advice if you're planning to go, book your hotel and party tickets well in advance because the biggest events regularly sell out, as do the hotel rooms.

Best gay saunas in Madrid
Madrid has a handful of gay saunas, but the two we recommend are Sauna Paraíso and Sauna Beach. Paraíso is one of the city's biggest and most popular, located in Chueca, with a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, and private cabins. Sauna Beach is the other popular gay Sauna in Madrid that most gravitate to, with a beach-themed bar and spa facilities spread across several levels.
Heads up: during major events like Madrid Pride, we've heard reports that the police carry out spot drug checks, including at the queues to the gay saunas, and may even come inside to check in the locker area, so take care!
Is there any outdoor cruising in Madrid?
Yes, Madrid has several well-known outdoor cruising areas. Parque del Retiro becomes cruisier after dark, particularly around the wooded area near the Fallen Angel statue (Estatua del Ángel Caído), while the enormous Casa de Campo is another popular spot, especially around Camino de los Romeros and the old Teleférico station. Nudism is also common in parts of Casa de Campo during the warmer months.

What are the best gay shops in Madrid?
Chueca is a dangerous place for our wallets! Boxer is great for gay fashion, underwear, and something a little more daring for a night out, while Addicted is the place to stock up on the iconic Spanish gay brand's swimwear, underwear, and sportswear. For something completely different, Libreria Berkana is a lovely LGBTQ+ bookshop where you can browse gay literature, comics and plenty of other queer reads.
Special offer for you: claim 10% off any items of clothing on the Addicted and ES websites using our discount code: NOMADICBOYS. You're welcome 🙂
Are there any gay swimming places in Madrid?
Yes! Piscina Lago in Casa de Campo is the place to head when Madrid heats up, and in summer it becomes especially popular with the gay crowd. It's only around 10 minutes from central Madrid by Metro, making it an easy escape for an afternoon of sunbathing, swimming, and “checking out the scenery”. If you're looking for the city's top outdoor pool during the warmer months, this is the one we'd recommend.

What are the best things to do in Madrid?
When we manage to drag ourselves away from Chueca, Madrid has more than enough to keep us busy during the day. We love wandering through the grand rooms of the Royal Palace, switching off in Retiro Park, and getting our culture fix at the Prado Museum and Reina Sofía Museum, where Picasso's Guernica is the big must-see. But let's be honest, a large part of our Madrid sightseeing revolves around food, so tapas hopping and a wander through Mercado de San Miguel always find their way onto our itinerary.
Madrid is also perfectly placed for a day trip when we fancy escaping the city. We've got Toledo, Segovia and Ávila on our radar, each offering something completely different: medieval streets in Toledo, Segovia's spectacular Roman aqueduct and the mighty city walls of Ávila. Just make sure you leave enough energy for Chueca when you get back…
If you're traveling further afield, be sure to check out glorious Valencia, the foodie capital that is Bilbao, and of course, the super gay Gran Canaria, especially during Maspalomas Pride in May and Winter Pride in November – all very easy to reach from Madrid by train or flight from Barajas Airport.
Heads up: the Madrid foodie specialty is oreja de cerdo, aka deep-fried crispy pig's ears. I'll be honest, it's a choice… Not for us, but hey, at least we tried it…

Why trust our gay Madrid guide?
Oh, we've been around the block in Madrid many, many times! Since starting Nomadic Boys in 2013, we've returned to the Spanish capital again and again for city breaks, Pride, New Year's, and some seriously big nights out. Everything in this guide comes from our own experiences, with a little help from the local gay friends we've made along the way.
- We've experienced gay Madrid first-hand: We've stayed in Chueca, bar hopped around its gay scene, danced at the big parties, and experienced Madrid Pride several times.
- We keep this guide updated: Gay venues come and go, so we regularly check what's still open and update our recommendations after each visit.
- We've been writing about gay travel since 2013: More than 3 million travelers visit Nomadic Boys each year for our first-hand LGBTQ+ travel advice.
- We wrote the book on gay travel: Literally! We're the authors of Out in the World: The Gay Guide to Travelling with Pride, published in 2024 and republished/updated in 2026 in softback.
- We speak to locals: We stay in touch with friends and people in Madrid's LGBTQ+ community to help keep our recommendations current and genuinely useful.
