What’s it like attending Madrid Pride?

What’s it like attending Madrid Pride?

Madrid Pride is one of the biggest gay celebrations in the world, taking over the Spanish capital with a massive parade, street parties, free concerts, and some of the biggest gay parties in Europe. We share exactly what it’s like to attend Madrid Pride, along with everything you need to know before you go.

Absolutely mad! In the best way possible…

Madrid Pride is one of those events that completely takes over the city. Chueca spills out onto the streets, huge stages pop up across the center, the parade draws enormous crowds, and some of Europe’s biggest gay parties keep going until well after sunrise.

We’ve been to a lot of Prides around the world over the years, but Madrid Pride is one we keep coming back to. There’s something about the sheer scale of it all. One minute you’re dancing outside with thousands of people at a free street party, the next you’re watching the famous High Heel Race through Chueca, before somehow emerging from a circuit party as Madrid is waking up for breakfast.

For us, Madrid Pride is the kind of week where Seby and I barely see our hotel room, survive on far too little sleep, and somehow still find ourselves ready to do it all over again the following night.

It’s intense, exhausting, exhilarating, and an absolute blast. In this guide, we share our firsthand experience of Madrid Pride, along with everything you need to know about the parade, parties, where to stay, and our top tips for making the most of it.

What can you expect at Madrid Pride?

Madrid Pride isn't the kind of event where you turn up for the parade, have a drink, then head home. For almost an entire week, central Madrid is one huge celebration. Chueca becomes the beating heart of it all, with streets overflowing with people, outdoor stages, pop-up bars and an atmosphere that's impossible not to get swept up in. By night, some of the biggest gay parties in Europe take over, attracting thousands of guys from all over the world.

Our biggest piece of advice? Don't try to plan every minute of your trip. Some of our favorite Madrid Pride memories have happened completely by accident. Every time we wandered into Chueca, we'd bump into friends we weren't expecting to see, discover an impromptu street party, and before we knew it, it was 6 am and we were somehow still going… Madrid Pride is hot, loud, gloriously chaotic, and wonderfully unpredictable. The more you go with the flow, the more you'll fall in love with it. That's why we keep returning each year 🙂

One thing we'd add: Madrid Pride is one of many excellent gay events in Spain, a country we love and visit several times throughout the year, whether it's for Maspalomas Pride in May, Barcelona Pride in July, or Winter Pride in November.

Boys boys boys…

How many people go to Madrid Pride?

Literally millions! Estimates we see in the press each year put it at around 2-3 million, which makes it one of the biggest gay events in the world – certainly the largest gay event in Europe.

In short, it's a big one! And that's why we make a big fuss over it 🙂

When is the next Madrid Pride?

Madrid Pride usually takes place on the first Saturday of July, which often means it clashes with Pride in London.

The next Madrid Pride is expected to take place over the weekend of 3-4 July 2027, with the main Pride parade on Saturday, 3 July 2027.

What are the main gay parties during Madrid Pride?

Madrid Pride is one of those weeks where choosing which party to skip is much harder than choosing which one to go to!

MyPleasure has become one of our favourite parties during Madrid Pride. Each event takes over a different venue across the city, with impressive production, a fun international crowd, and a huge darkroom that's always buzzing. We've always had a brilliant night here, and if we had to recommend just one party promoter for Pride week, this would probably be it.

WE Party is Madrid's biggest and best-known circuit party promoter, hosting huge events like Sundia, Macho and Guapo throughout Pride week. Many take place at iconic venues such as Fabrik, with massive productions, internationally renowned DJs, and thousands of guys on the dance floor. If you're after the full-scale circuit party experience, this is where you'll find it.

And of course, the gay scene of Madrid is always alive and buzzing, particularly during the Pride weekend, so the bars and clubs will be overflowing with gays from all around the world who are in town for the big party.

What’s the Madrid Pride parade like?

The only word that comes to mind is… WOWzers!

We've watched plenty of Pride parades around the world, but nothing quite prepares you for the sheer scale of the Madrid Pride Parade. It's loud, colorful, unapologetically over the top, and the atmosphere is completely infectious.

The parade usually takes place on the first Saturday of July, winding its way through central Madrid with dozens of colourful floats, DJs, dancers and hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the route.

Our biggest tip? Get there early. The best viewing spots fill up quickly, and once the crowds arrive, moving around becomes almost impossible. Even if you've been to other major Prides before, Madrid somehow manages to feel even bigger.

Where should you stay for Madrid Pride?

If it's your first Madrid Pride, we'd definitely recommend staying in or around Chueca. It's the heart of the celebrations, meaning you can walk to the parade, outdoor stages, bars, and most of the nightlife without relying on public transport or taxis.

Our favourite hotels for Pride include Axel Hotel Madrid, Room Mate Óscar, Only YOU Boutique Hotel Madrid and JC Rooms Santa Ana, all of which offer an excellent base for exploring the city during Pride week.

If you don't mind being a 10-minute walk away, Alonso Martínez is our favourite alternative. It's just north of Chueca, outside the road closures that come into force during Pride, making it much easier to grab a taxi when you need one. The metro connection to Madrid-Barajas Airport is also more straightforward. Hotel recommendation for this area is Hotel Boutique Urban Madrid Genova, which we stayed at for our most recent Madrid Pride, which we found last minute on Booking .com.

How many days do you need for Madrid Pride?

We'd recommend making Madrid Pride an extended city break rather than a quick weekend. We usually arrive on Thursday and fly home on Monday, which gives us enough time to soak up the atmosphere in Chueca, enjoy a couple of the big parties, watch the Pride parade on Saturday, and still have time to recover before heading home.

Could you squeeze it into a Friday-to-Sunday trip? Absolutely. But if you can spare the extra day or two, you'll get a much better feel for why Madrid Pride is one of our favourite weeks of the year. And also make sure you free up some time to see the sites. Madrid has some of the best museums in the world, including the Prado and Reina Sophia. If you're staying in town longer as a base, check out the foodie Basque city of Bilbao and the pretty Valencia.

Our top tips for attending Madrid Pride

A little preparation goes a long way at Madrid Pride. Here are our top tips after many trips over the years:

  • Book early: Hotels in and around Chueca fill up months in advance, and the biggest parties often sell out before Pride week even begins.
  • Don't over-plan: Some of our best Madrid Pride memories have happened completely by accident. Leave plenty of time to recover, as well as to wander around Chueca and soak up the atmosphere.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: You'll easily clock up upwards of 20,000 daily steps between the parade, street parties, and club nights.
  • Expect a strong police presence: Security is taken seriously during Madrid Pride, particularly at the larger parties where bag checks and queues are common. Do yourself a favor and either keep your candy in your hotel room or be prepared to hide it in your junk, especially in the streets when police are around or at some club entrances.
  • Poppers are illegal in Spain! Worst-case scenario, the police will confiscate it and take down your details. Either leave it in the hotel room or be prepared to hide it in your bulge area if you see a police presence.
  • Stay hydrated: Madrid in early July is seriously hot, so carry a bottle of water and pace yourself, especially if you're partying into the early hours.
  • Carry photo ID: It's useful for party entry and, with increased security during Pride week, it's sensible to have identification with you.

So…is Madrid Pride worth attending?

Absolutely!

We've been lucky enough to experience Pride celebrations all over the world, and Madrid remains one of the highlights of our year. It has everything we look for in a great Pride: a welcoming atmosphere, a buzzing gay neighborhood, an enormous parade, world-class parties, and a city that fully embraces the celebrations.

If you love being surrounded by thousands of other gay travelers, dancing until sunrise, and soaking up one of Europe's biggest LGBTQ+ celebrations, you'll have an incredible time. Be prepared for very little sleep, sore feet, and a social battery that's working overtime, but we'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
