Best Gay Hotels in Athens

Stefan Arestis
Best Gay Hotels in Athens

We feature the best gay hotels in Athens to suit all budgets, from chic boutique gems to lavish retreats, ensuring a stay that’s as stylish, welcoming, and full of Greek charm as the city itself.

Athens holds a special place in our hearts. It’s where we first learned that the Greek gods were as dramatic as a season finale of Drag Race and where we discovered that no matter how much gym time we put in, we’d never achieve those chiseled ancient-statue abs…

Beyond the ruins and the ridiculously good food (seriously, we’d move here just for the souvlaki), the gay scene of Athens is always exciting. The Gazi district is the beating heart of it, with bars like Sodade2 and Big Bar keeping the party going till sunrise.

And, of course, we’ve made it our mission to find the best places to stay for all budgets including chic boutique hotels to luxury stays where you’ll be pampered like an Olympian.

So, if you’re planning a Greek getaway, here’s our list of the best gay-friendly hotels in Athens, some we have personally tried, others have been recommended by gay locals in the city as well as fellow LGBTQ+ travelers. We recommend you bookmark our Greece gay travel guide to help plan your trip to the rest of the country.

Heads up, in this guide we've also featured hotels that have the Booking.Com #TravelProud certification which confirms it has undergone the Proud Hospitality training to ensure it is welcoming to all LGBTQ+ travelers. For more check out this video they posted on their YouTube channel:

How gay friendly is Athens?

If Zeus were around today, we're pretty sure he'd be waving a rainbow flag atop the Acropolis. The LGBTQ+ laws of Greece have undergone a fabulous transformation, with Athens emerging as one of Europe's most welcoming cities for LGBTQ+ travelers. In February 2024, Greece made history by becoming the first Orthodox Christian country to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption, a landmark reform that signaled a new era of acceptance and equality.

Our personal experiences as an openly gay couple in Athens have been nothing short of delightful. Strolling hand-in-hand through the city's ancient streets, we've always felt embraced by the local community. The vibrant neighborhood of Gazi stands out as the epicenter of Athens' gay scene. Here, the nightlife is as energetic as a Greek wedding dance, with venues like Sodade2, a stylish club boasting two dance floors, and Shamone, renowned for its fabulous drag shows.

47 Luxury Suites

Gazi

A spacious hotel suite with two levels, a comfy bed and elegant decor.

In a nutshell

  • Rooftop Jacuzzis: Acropolis views included
  • Massive apartments: room to sashay
  • Near Gazi nightlife: stumble home in minutes
  • Luxury meets home comforts

If you love the idea of having your own space in Athens without sacrificing hotel-level luxury, 47 Luxury Suites is the sweet spot. We stayed here and felt like Greek goddesses with our own private temple, except instead of Mount Olympus, we had a rooftop jacuzzi with an Acropolis view.

Located just outside the buzz of Gazi, it’s close enough to stumble home after a night at the Sodade2 gay club of Athens, but far enough for a peaceful morning coffee on the balcony. Each apartment is huge, sleek, and modern, with all the comforts of home – if home came with daily housekeeping and a concierge ready to sort your every whim…

Perfect for gay couples, small groups, or anyone who likes a bit of space to spread out, this is one of the best mid-range stays in Athens for gay travelers looking for comfort, style, and a touch of indulgence.

  • Psiri location: hipster cafés and street art galore
  • Easy access to the gay nightlife in Gazi and Monastiraki

If these walls could talk, they’d tell tales of textiles and trading deals. For over 70 years, this building was a buzzing hub of commerce. Now, it’s been transformed into a stylish boutique hotel that keeps its industrial roots intact while adding a hefty dose of comfort and charm.

We love a hotel with character, and Nema delivers. Think exposed brick, high ceilings, and sleek modern touches that make it feel effortlessly cool. It’s located in Psiri, one of Athens’ trendiest neighborhoods, where coffee shops, street art, and quirky boutiques reign supreme. Plus, it’s just a short walk to Monastiraki and Gazi, meaning you’re never far from ancient ruins by day and gay bars by night.

Alexander Apartments

Gazi

Alexander Apartments gay hotel in Athens

In a nutshell

  • Located inside a gay sauna…need we say more?!
  • Endless “networking” opportunities(!)
  • Surprisingly comfy rooms
  • Walking distance to the gay bars and clubs of Gazi

Some hotels claim to be gay-friendly. Alexander Apartments skips the formalities and plants you right in the middle of Athens’ steamiest gay hotspot…literally! This isn’t just an apartment. It’s an apartment inside a gay sauna. Yes, you read that right.

If you’re the type who prefers a quiet night in, this might not be for you. But if the idea of stepping out of your room straight into a world of towel-clad men, dark rooms, and bubbling Jacuzzis excites you… well, welcome home! We stayed here and let’s just say, getting a “good night’s sleep” was optional. However, if that is your vibe, our heads up would be to stay here on a weekend as it’s not that busy on a weekday.

Despite the (ahem!) extracurricular activities available, the apartments themselves are modern, clean, and surprisingly peaceful. You’re also in a great location to explore the city, though we won’t blame you if you never make it past the front door.

Prices at Alexander Apartments start from $53 per night:
