Iriomote is a paradise island. Beautyful beaches for divers and snorkeling, amasing rivers and waterfalls, mangroves which seem to have no ending. The most beautiful night sky we have ever seen. First we thought that it was cloudy, but no, we saw the milky way! Very tasty local food.
But be aware, it's wild nature including enormous spiders and "blind spots" for telecommunication. Always check the weather conditions before starting any tour or trip.
Moving around by public transportation is challanging, but possible (since timetables are very acurately obeyed, but do calculate with long waiting periods). There are NO taxis available. So bring an English translation of your driver's license along if you want to rent a car.
There is no airport on Iriomote but on nearby (45 minutes by ferry) Ishigaki island. Do calculate also some spare time to reach your fligth in case of bad weather conditions. Ferries might be cancelled.

The island is great, lots of things to do from snorkling, diving to jungle trekking and kayaking in the mangrove.
Lots of tour available some of expensive some not. You can book snorkling for 4500¥ half day to sea beautiful coral, sea turtle( we saw three)
Night sky is beautiful, it has been a while since i saw the milky way so vividly.
The sea is very clean, just be aware of hub jelly fish. We saw one in a spot we were swiming and Got my kids to realise the danger of sea swimming... just be careful it is wild and beautifull.
Renting a car is a must.

It is absolutely beautiful!
It is absolutely beautiful! The nature is unreal and mostly untouched. I signed up for a tour to kayak to the largest waterfall in Iriomote and then hike to the top. It was an amazing trip! The island is very spread out with only one road, so getting to opposite sides of the island is pretty difficult, but doable. I would say rent a car, but if you don't want to, you can easily take the bus. Everywhere I went, the people were very welcoming and open to talking with me. Honestly, I just loved it!
